A review by Rick Jamm June 2013

Influenced by everyone from Stevie Wonder to the Pet Shop Boys and Michael Jackson,Richard Anthony’s style is an array of what he grew up loving. Anthony’s unabashed vocal sincerity and musical romanticism, while not always hip, will always be “in”. As hip-hop, dubstep, shoegaze, and every other here-today-gone-tomorrow style passes by, the one constant is the romantic ballad or catchy pop song. Anthony may not consciously know it, but his formula never strays far from it.

Richard Anthony’s collection of songs is meant to leave you alternately teary-eyed, smiling sadly, or dancing. From the tender father-and-son anthem “Even If” to the stand up and dance rhythms of “Love Is The Power” it may come as no surprise if legions of foster parents or scores of youthful teens come out of the woodwork to share in Anthony’s musical achievements.

When he sings “Even If” or even “Lonely”, it’s easy to understand his appeal. Simply, he writes the songs that anyone in the world could sing. Anthony’s music is for those who aren’t afraid to feel, or aren’t afraid to love and appreciate life at its fullest.

His passion flows from his soul into his music. It’s not rocket science or about his technical abilities, both vocally and musically. Anthony’s songs are intuitive, intimate and personal. He doesn’t sing with an open mouth, he sings with his heart wide open. On the release of “Even If,” which deals with Anthony’s fostering experience, he donated all proceeds to theGuardian Angel Home of Joliet.

Anthony has also worked with Producer Victor Crowl in Canada, on various recordings.

The lyrics to his songs transmit an uncommon quality of simplicity, emotion and grace, while his classic easy going pop style is a combination of emotion and dedication. He humbly delivers his songs graciously and without pretense. In short, Richard Anthony does a great job and uses his skills and talents well, for the benefit of his listeners and his community.

REVIEW - Richard Anthony – Connected

“Connected” is the introduction that many listeners will have to Richard Anthony; the catchy pop that opens up the disc provides a perfect backdrop that Anthony can then build off of. “Even If” continues many of the trends that are initially present during “Connected”, placing Anthony’s vocals at the forefront of the track. The guitar work and drums present during this track provide additional levels of complexity; “Even If” is the sort of track that will open up nicely to repeat listening. “Make Me Yours” is another track that establishes Anthony’s sound as something that is amenable to fans of a wide array of genres and sounds.

The track succeeds on a break from the sounds broached during the first few tracks; there is a Depeche Mode meets Cure feel that gradually gains momentum as the track continues to spin on. “Connected Part One” is the rare example of an album that gets better as it spins on – late disc track “Charge Me Up” is a perfect example of this. “Charge Me Up” is a success because it does not rely on the tacks that Anthony has taken on previous album track. The electronic-infused instrumentation that begins the track adds a certain drive to the track that is otherwise unparalleled. Anthony’s vocals take up the challenge and take listeners through a five minute-plus journey.

Despite the fact that there are many different influences and musical styles that are present during “Connected Part One”, listeners will nevertheless find a common thread in Anthony’s vocals. No matter what tempo or feel is fostered during the track, Anthony’s voice acts as the glue. It is due to this fact that “Connected Part One” succeeds so well – one just needs to listen to a track like “Do You Ever Wonder Why” to understand this. The track represents for me the range of twists and turns that Anthony provides his listeners, as well as acting as the jumping off point for any subsequent recordings or live dates that he may enter into.
